Fear No Evil
"Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ is the ONLY solution to the problem of sin."
One of the most well-known passages of Scripture is Psalm 23. In verse 4, David (the Psalmist) says: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” In a different Psalm, David declares: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?” [Psalm 27:1]. These verses demonstrate that one of the things people who live in a sinful world face every day is fear. David, one of the greatest warriors in the history of Israel - the man who stepped out to fight against Goliath - addressed time and again the fact that fear is something that remained an issue for him - except that the Lord is “with me.”
Earlier this week, one of the most terrifying events imaginable unfolded in Las Vegas. A man, perched on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, began an eleven minute barrage of gunfire that sprayed a crowd of 22,000 at an outdoor concert not far from the hotel. Without warning, bullets rained down upon helpless victims - killing 58 people and injuring 500+ more. It has been reported as the single worst shooting event in US history. As President Trump said in his statement: This was “an act of pure evil.”
Evil is the description of that which is in opposition to the holiness of God. Wickedness, evil, wretchedness, depravity, and sinfulness describe the state of being that is in opposition to righteousness, holiness, purity, uprightness, and virtue. These terms are moral terms that gain their meaning on the basis of an absolute moral standard that is found in the Person of God. Evil originated with the initial act of rebellion against God that resulted in sin and death. It has penetrated and impacted every aspect of life, infecting everything we experience.
Yet God has declared that He provides the solution to evil - the salvation provided by Jesus Christ whereby sinners are delivered from the power of sin through the love of God and the sacrifice of Christ upon the cross. Ultimately nothing originating from people will solve the problem of evil - not more laws, restrictions, supervision, police, medication, therapy, or incarceration. Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ is the ONLY solution to the problem of sin.
God - out of His mercy and compassion - does restrain sin so that it is not as devastating as could be. We are told that “for the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way” [2 Thessalonians 2:7]. God disallows evil from being as rampant as it otherwise could be. He is the constant agent of constant protection [2 Thessalonians 3:3], sheltering [Psalm 5:11], safeguarding [Psalm 121:8], preserving [Psalm 64:1] and defending [Psalm 27:1]. He is perpetually watching over us “to protect us from all evil; He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever” [Psalm 121:7-8].
Ultimately, we live by faith, walk by faith, and look to God to continue to be gracious to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. May we rest in His faithfulness and mercy - day by day!
