Election Week

Rick BlogI cast my vote last night, one week early.

It has been a long election cycle. The stories, slanders, and sleaze has been unprecedented. It has seemed that both major candidates have sought to insure that the other gets elected. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more bizarre, another “leak” or another outlandish statement captured the headlines. Neither candidate seems like the best that the United States has to offer. But, it is amazing how that even though we think that we are “self-governing,” a democracy (or, a representative republic) cannot thwart the will of a sovereign God. Scripture declares: “It is [God] who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding” (Daniel 2:21).

God has declared that He is not dependent on righteous rulers, but works His purposes through Kings, Caesars, Dictators, Tyrants, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Emperors, Czars, Shahs, or any other form of ruler that the world puts forth. It is interesting that in the history of the world, relatively few “rulers” have even known God. Even in the history of Israel, the majority of Kings were idolatrous and immoral men. Throughout time, the existence of a righteous ruler has been a true blessing from the Lord - something that America has occasionally known throughout its history. We are beginning to see the other side of the coin as a godless population promotes types of themselves into positions of power. As Proverbs 29:2 declares: “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked man rules, people groan.” Certainly, believers have found ways to live quiet and peaceable lives to the degree that God has allowed - the responsibility of godly men and women. We look to people like Joseph who faithfully served a pagan Pharaoh; and, Daniel who served through a diversity of ungodly regimes of both Babylonians, Medes and Persians. Loyalty to their rulers and to the Lord God were simultaneously and wisely provided and God blessed them.

There have been those who have said that they would never vote for an ungodly person for the office of President. Since I have been alive (I am an Eisenhower baby) we have had a series of notoriously ungodly Presidents. We are not certain of any of their spiritual lives - whether any of them know righteousness through faith in Christ Jesus. I’ve been more comfortable with some of our Presidents over others for sure. Currently, my agreement with God in my voting record is merely above average. I’ve only voted 6 out of 10 times for the person that God chose to place in office. My concern is that barring any unprecedented event, either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will be God’s choice for President of the United States - a person that I will be called upon to pray for and obey. I pray that I am “with God” in His choice for this election.

God’s purposes for His world continue to march unhindered forward toward a great consummation when Christ Jesus will rule in the Millennial Kingdom. Of course, that will be preceded by an unprecedented time of Tribulation during which the most wicked man in the history of the world will rule the world in satanic power and supernatural influence. As we march toward this unprecedented time when God grants authority to the Antichrist to rule during the Tribulation, Paul tells Timothy that “evil men will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13). Of course, before the Man of Lawlessness will be revealed, the Restrainer will have to be removed causing the great Apostasy - an event that describes the affects of the Rapture of the Church (2 Thessalonians 2).

As we see the day drawing near, our responsibility is to regularly gather for the purpose of encouraging one another in godliness (Hebrews 10:25); faithfully proclaim the worthiness of Jesus to the lost so that they might come to know Him and His excellencies (1 Peter 2:9-12); and, pray for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity (1 Timothy 2:2). Nothing will derail God’s plan to bring Himself glory in the nations of this world, including the United States. May we rest in Him even when politics, elections, and candidates whip up anguish. Our God reigns!
